Motivation: Defined and Early Theories


  • Individual differ in their basic motivation drive
  • Difficult to read textbook (syllabus), but 20 minutes to read Harry potter.
  • For student change of motivation is driven by situation.
  • Level of motivation varies between individuals and individual at different times(situation)
  •  “The processes that account for an individual’s intensity, direction and persistence of effort towards attaining a goal.”
  • In general: efforts towards attaining a goal. (organization goals) 
  • Three key elements: 
    • Intensity: how hard a person tries?
    • Direction: channeled in right direction (goal) 
    • Persistence: how long a person can maintain their effort? 

Early theories of Motivation:

  • 1950s, development of motivation concepts
  • 3 foundation theories:
    • Hierarchy of needs theory
    • Theory X and Theory Y
    • Two factor theory
